Posted by u/TheQueitOne 5 hours ago AITA: Work made me go on leave So I (27f) was doing an 18 month manager in training (MIT) program.
  • 03
Towards the end of my program my bosses hired a new MIT and told me that by the time my program ended I would have to find a new branch within the company to move to (or leave the company) because I couldn't stay there. This
  • 04
shocked me as I was the most senior in my position, and had moved for this job. I was still planning on living in this city for a couple more years as well. There was no rational reasoning other than that my
  • 05
program had ended and that there's was "no more room" for me as they hired someone else. When the new hire came on I was expected to fully train her. Once I was done training her I was
  • 06
expected to find a new job as it would be past my program end date. Unfortunately shortly into training the new MIT she got into a horrible accident and couldn't work for a while, therefore my job asked me to stay
  • 07
longer. They wanted me to continue in my position and then continue training the hire when she came back. After about 2 months, the girl came back we finished her training and I applied for another job in the
  • 08
establishment. To my surprise I didn't get the job and I was left distraught as it is very hard to get a job out there.
  • 09
Fortunately, I had some vacation left so I took almost 2 weeks vacation and then came back to work. When I came back my bosses sat me down and said they again had "no more room" for me and that me being there
  • 10
was "not budgeted." They worked a deal with me that I work for 2 weeks, take a leave of absence (LOA) for 2 weeks, then come back for another 2 weeks to help cover vacations, and from there go on an indefinite LOA.
  • 11
They fully encouraged me to look for other jobs and that they would give me great references if needed. I obliged, I was grateful for the time off but also concerned.
  • 12
By the time my indefinite LOA was coming up I went to HR to make sure I'd be able to receive unemployment while I was on this leave, and they were completely confused on the entire situation. They said they
  • 13
never knew I was going on leave due to these reasons and wanted to have a meeting with me after they sorted somethings out. Next thing I know I'm having a meeting with my bosses and HR. HR apologized
  • 14
and explained that I still have a job and that I never should've been told I didn't have a job. They informed me that if I chose to take the LOA that's perfectly fine and when I came back I'd still have a job.
  • 15
I took this into consideration as well as the fact that it's Christmas time. In my line of work, you NEVER receive Christmas off as it is the most chaotic and straining time for everyone in the company.
  • 16
Out of spite of the hit I've been through over the last 6 months I decided to take the leave let my team hang in the wind. So that they could struggle without me being there as
  • 17
punishment for making me go through the troubles I have. I decided to take a leave for a whole month therefore I'd miss Christmas and New Years and come back when things are more calm. AITA for that?

Olivia Presteign. 5 hr. ago You're definitely NTA, but something weird is going on with your manager and I'm glad you got HR involved.

body_slam_poet. 3 hr. ago Lol, your boss is firing you. They don't want you there. They're being cowardly about it,
  • 20
but take the hint. I hope you're looking for other work. Find something else. You can't realistically stay where you aren't wanted.
  • 21
anxiousalleyway. 4 hr. ago NTA - you've been completely messed around by what sounds like incredibly poor management. Management who take on people for training
  • 22
with no thought or consideration to how they would be placed afterwards or what kind of a situation that would leave them in. If you'd been told at the start "there's no guaranteed job at the
  • 23
end of this but we will give you sufficient notice of this and assist your job search" (which you should have been told if that was the case) then they've dealt with it poorly even then.
  • 24
I would've 100% done what you did. You don't owe them anything right now - you've gone above and beyond and they've dragged you through a HR mess for, what sounds like, no good reason at all.
  • 25
Safety Man35 1 hr. ago ● NTA. Use the time off to find another job and keep looking for another job then quit with no notice (unless the boss that "fired" you is removed.

Regguls864 42 min. ago • What is the relationship between the new hire and your boss? There is a chance your boss won't be there when you get back. Your mistake is not going to HR when
  • 27
this all started. Nothing wrong with asking HR why am I being let go. Just get everything in writing. Document the dates, times, who was in the conversation,
  • 28
and what was said. If you don't like your job take the time off to look for another and don't return.
